Inter University Football Championship – 2017 will be under way tomorrow onwards at Winston Dias Stadium, Badulla. This time the tournament is hosted by Uva Wellassa University which will be worked off on 22nd, 23rd and 24th of September, 2017. Almost all the teams have arrived to Badulla to see the harvest of their hard work, dedication and commitment of past 12 months.

University of Jaffna is a team that has maintained a consistent record during last few years. Interestingly, this year there were few considerable achievements from other universities, that triggered the curiosity of this year’s Championship. University of Moratuwa was able to clinch the Pera Cup creating a major upset few weeks before. They also qualified for the FA cup last year beating their rivals in the University category. In other words, University of Moratuwa has advanced from strength to strength thus, they are one of the favourites in this tournament. But, Japura, Pera and Colombo will not be second to any team.

Inclusion of new comers in the competing teams is another major factor that will be decisive as the tournament progresses. Newly included Goalkeeper of University of Moratuwa, Mandapa Pandithage, Former Captain of 1st XI Soccer team of Ananda College, Colombo will be a player to watch. He has proved his capabilities by representing Sri Lanka Schools National side in U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19 categories. University of Colombo is also a team with young blood. Most importantly, Champaka Warnapura, who also has represented Sri Lanka Schools National side will be playing for University of Peradeniya and putting his utmost effort to bring glory to Pera.

According to the classification of groups University of Jaffna, University of Peradeniya and University of Ruhuna will be lined up in group A. Group B consists of University of Sri Jayawardanepura, University of Moratuwa and Uva Wellassa University. South Eastern University, Eastern University and University of Rajarata are included in group C. The most competitive cluster will be group D which consists University of Colombo, Sabaramuwa University, Wayamba University and University of Kelaniya.

Summing up, it’s going to be a tussle filled with enthusiasm and passion. Though few teams can be called as favourites, uncertainty of end result is the nature of the game. We invite all the sports lovers to witness this tournament and support your teams to make the best out of this.
