After all the action from the previous week, second round of preliminary stage of Inter-University Rugby Championship took place at Colombo and Peradeniya simultaneously on 11th of August.

Inter University Rugby Championship was kicked-off yesterday with 5 preliminary round matches played at Colombo and Peradeniya during the weekend. University of Sri Jayawardanepura locked horns with University of Jaffna while Wayamba University confronted Rajarata University at University of Colombo grounds. Simultaneously, Uva Wellassa University played against Eastern University and Sabaragamuwa University challenged South Eastern University at Peradeniya University Grounds.

As an indoor volleyball court wasn’t their luxury like it was for many other universities, they opted to play on an outdoor court, not out of choice but out of lack of options. As their practice sessions often clashed with late hours of the day, providing a lighting supply to the court was the next challenge they had to overcome. After several failed attempts to sway the university administration’s attention in that direction over two years, they decided to spend out of their own pockets and buy six flashlights for the court.

Sunday dawned to the most anticipated Match of the Mora fans in the IUG Elle tournament. Having lost the Match with Eastern University, Mora had to win this match to stay in the series. University of Ruhuna team was well equipped with strategic and energetic strikers who seemed to be an unvarying challenge from the beginning.

It was an absolute Thriller! They had to face many challenges and the odds were quite against them but through shear determination and passion they won it all! On the final day of Inter University Chess Championship 2018, University of Sri Jayawardenapura emerged as the champions of men’s division while University of Colombo became the ultimate dominators of the women’s division.

University of Jaffna was ready to battle in the great war which was about to begin in a few moments. The spectators were more than happy to get in the middle of the crossfire and witness some mind-blowing action. All the participating university chess teams were equipped with the best players of their respective universities and were already at the venue. Their battle plans and strategies might be quite different but, all of them have the same motive for certain; to win the championship and bring honor and glory to their alma mater.
