The luckiest rackets!

The gymnasium of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka was got ready from early morning for the most awaited day. All the badminton lovers representing all universities were gathered to WUSL on 7th August 2017 since the final matches of badminton of Inter University Games 2017 were happened on there.

After a rainy night, the weather was blessed the players with a pleasant mood and fresh environment. So all the players and the cheering crowd entered to the WUSL gymnasium with a fresh mood and smiling faces. The gymnasium was filled with badminton lovers and their voices echoed making the players more confident.

All were counted fingers to see the champions. The only hope of every eye that kept on players was to bring the championship to their university.

In consolation finals, University of Moratuwa won matches in both men’s and women’s categories defeating University of Peradeniya by 3-1 points.

Men’s final matches were held between University of Sri Jayawardanapura and University of Colombo by giving the winning to SJP by 3-2 points.

In women’s finals, SJP again took the victory by 3-1 points defeating University of Kelaniya.

University of Sri Jayawardenepura was lucky enough to take the both championships. The two captains were very happy as their dream came true. The SJP team was powered with some players who are representing national team also.

The second places were gone to UOC in men’s category and UOK in women’s category. The smiling faces of the players of both universities represented the happiness of taking the runner up of badminton tournament of Inter University Games 2017.

University of Moratuwa performed well and won the third place. The captain and the vice-captain of UOM women’s team Thilini Nadeera and Sachini Hewage were very happy about this winning. Last year they couldn’t be able to come to semifinals even. Their target was to come to the semifinals however. They have already passed their target and go ahead by defeating the third placed team of last year. They specially thanked their coaches Mr. Indika Nilushan and Mr. Charith Harindu for their great effort and also master in charge Mr. Pavithra Arachchi, Senior lecturer Dr. Thilina Lalitharathna for becoming their shadows. They thanked all the passed out seniors and the men’s team of UOM for the advices and support. They indicated that the hard practicing of the players carried them to the success. The men’s team also very happy about the achievement and they specially mentioned about the strength given by the physical education unit of UOM.
