UMiSF Bids Farewell to 2014

15th instant marked the curtain closure for the University of Moratuwa International Shuttlers’ Fest 2014, known to sports fans as UMiSF 2014. This annual event was organized for the 7th consecutive year by the University of Moratuwa badminton team. This year’s event witnessed a participation of more than 1000 students from 80 schools and 10 major universities around the island, making it the biggest badminton tournament organized by a university in Sri Lanka up to date. The tournament was held from the 5th to 15th of September at UOM new gymnasium, under two main categories; All-island age group badminton tournament and Inter- University badminton tournament.

University of Moratuwa has been contributing to develop shuttling skills among not only undergraduates but also school children who are in search of a platform to perform. With that intention, this tournament which first commenced in 2007 as the annual badminton tournament organized by the badminton team of UOM, in collaboration with the physical education division, went international changing to the format of UMiSF in the year of 2011. Continuing the tradition, University of Moratuwa Badminton team led by captains Pasindu Weerasinghe, Audarya Guruge and vice captains Chaminda Priyashad and Saumi Gunasekara hosted the UMiSF for the fourth consecutive year this time around.

Young talents from different parts of the country displayed a multitude of talents in the All Island age group badminton tournament. Similar to the previous edition the tournament was held under five age groups from under 11 to under 19. Curtain raising this year’s tournament and lasting for 8 days, All Island age group tournament saw some high paced and scintillating action, treat for the fans. With relentless shuttling, the kids won many sport lovers’ hearts and accolades.

NSBM finished the tournament with top honours securing gold in the men’s category of the Inter University tournament while APIIT women were their counter parts in the women’s category. USJP and KDU claimed the runners up and second runners up in the men’s category respectively. KDU won silver in the women’s category and NSBM women wrapped up third winning bronze opposed to the gold in the men’s edition. It was disheartening for the home crowd to see their team and last year champions of the men’s category, University of Moratuwa not being able to secure any of the top places in this year’s tournament.

The closing ceremony was held on the 15th at the civil auditorium, University of Moratuwa. The Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa, Prof. R.A. Attalage was the Chief Guest of the event and Dr. Sanja Gunawardena, Chairperson, Sports Advisory Board graced this occasion with her presence. Members of the Sports Advisory Board, Physical Education Division, parents, students and sports fanatics were among the other attendees. This colourful event was the icing on the cake for this grandeur tournament. The winners were presented awards in recognition of their talent in addition to the championship trophies.
