IUC 2018 Baseball | Karunarathne Pitches Perfect for Mora Baseball

It was the play day for the Baseball players as the ground of University of Moratuwa was about to host the most anticipated baseball event of the interuniversity calendar. With the loud cry of the umpire, “play ball”, the players gathered around the bases with high spirit and enthusiasm as they were about to prove themselves as the true rookies of the year.

In the very first two matches of the series, Mora took on Ruhuna while Wayaba clashed against Uva. The blue sharks’ thunder stunned the Ruhunu lads as they sealed the deal by setting the final score board to 19-4. Mora managed to bat through 5 inning stretch while Uva  lads were restricted to score only 4 runs off their 5 innings. The brilliant performance and the resilience of Mora pitchers, Dilshan and Nadun Karunarathne did not allow the Ruhunu batters to have any peace.

On the other end, Wayaba seized an easy victory over Uva setting the final score on the board to 17-7. Nimesh and Dilantha were responsible for most of the damage caused to the opposing side while the other batters also contributed their best to the Wayaba’s score. In reply to this challenging target which almost seemed to be a herculean task, Uva managed to sore only 7 runs off their 7 inning stretch. The second inning was the only fruitful inning of the Uva team.

Colombo boys managed to grasp a narrow victory over Rajarata (9-8) while Pera vs Ruhuna encounter also was a nail biter. Gold-and-Maroons fell 1 run short from the 15 run target which was set by the Ruhunu lads. In the final match of the 1st day, the formidable J’pura sealed another famous victory over Uva scoring 11 runs (11-0). From this victory, J’pura lads advanced one more step closer to the triumph of the “House of Champions”.

Mora team kicked off the proceedings of Day-2 in style achieving another easy victory over Pera. The blues led by the batters, Kavindu, Nadun and Panduka managed to set a 13 run target from their 5 inning stretch, although the lads from the hill country  fell 8 runs short. Yet again, the Mora pitchers, Dilshan and Nadun Karunarathne brought the Gold-and Maroons to their knees since none of the Pera batters were successful. The all rounding effort of Nadun Karunarathne was to be seen throughout this match.

Meanwhile, South Eastern vs. Rajarata and Kelaniya vs Sabare encounters both ended up in close calls resulting South Eastern and Kelaniya victorious. Although the Wayaba forces trembled before the might of J’pura baseball, Wayaba lads put up a brave front against the dominant House-of-Champions’ fortress as they sealed an easy victory (24-4). In the final match of the day, South Eastern lads stuck hard on Colombo finishing the match victoriously (16-9).

MoraSpirit would like to congratulate all the teams who qualified to the quarterfinals and we urge the sport enthusiastic viewers to stay in touch with us for live scores and updates of the remaining action filled two days of this series.
