J'pura Secured Its Way Towards IUGs 2018 Trophy

Another quarter final cricket match of Inter University Games (IUG) 2018 was successfully concluded yesterday at UoM ground. It was University of Sri Jayawardenepura Vs University of Peradeniya in the field of battle to start off their championship hunt.

The wet pitch and wet outfield, gloomy weather and the drizzle fall in the morning made J’pura and Pera cricket encounter delayed and shortened the battle to 45 overs per side.  Finally, when the sun made its appearance to the UoM ground the match kicked off. J'pura being the previous year's champion showed potential to glory. But surely the energized and spirited Pera players wouldn’t  give chances to their opponents.

The J’pura captain Kushan De Silva won the toss and elected to field first. Kavishka Dissanayaka and Kaveen Hiniduma opened the innings for Pera in a steady flow. In their early part of the innings they were dealing with singles and doubles. Kaveen Hiniduma had to lose his wicket in front of the bowling of Dew Wijesundara when the score was 32.

Even though the top order batsmen had built a good start, the fourth and the fifth batsmen were unable to score up for it to be in favour of them. They were dismissed by spin bowlers of J'pura at lower scores.

U. Kahagalla played a responsible knock by scoring 28 off 47 balls. M. Fatheen top scored with 28 runs and not out. The collection of these two took the Pera team to a respectable score of 145. Sapumal Narampanawa and Akila Wijesinghe of Pera were returned to the pavilion with single digit scores by Dew Wijesundra and Maduka Gamage respectively. The skipper, Nirandha Ranasinghe was fell away cheaply by Dew Wijesundara. Pera managed to score 174 runs in 45overs. But a score of 175 was quite an easy target.

On the bowling side, D. Wijesundara bowled remarkably and gave a hard time for the batsman by taking four wickets. M. Fernado was a successful bowler and bagged one wicket in 20 runs. M. Gamage and S. Ihkhan clinched one wicket each.

Team J'pura resumed the match with a modest task of chasing down the total of 175 in 45 overs. Kasun Anuruddha went out for a duck in his first innings. Pressure started to mount on the hearts of J’pura spectators with each ball after the 1st wicket fall.

However, Dhamithra Panditharathne joined with Thanula Wickramasinghe and the pair managed to put up a wonderful stand of 44 runs for the second wicket. Madhawa Ferenado played with a controlled aggression and could managed to pass a half-century.

After that, the wicket of J’pura started to tumble with no any real contribution from the bat. M. Fernando scored an unbeaten 63 runs. The last two overs of J’pura was concluded with stylish shots of fours marveling the cheering crowd of J’Pura. While bowling, N. Samarakoon earned two wickets. A. Bandara and S. Mihiranga picked up one wicket each.

J’ Pura won comprehensively against Pera by mustering a 176 score with 5 wickets.  Being the past titleholders, J’pura showed their potential in cricket arena and reigned the wining of preliminary round match.
