Newcomers sparkle as UOM cricket team outsmarts Panagoda CC

The fourth match of Division III first round was held between University of Moratuwa Cricket team and Panagoda CC. University of Moratuwa cricketers recorded a massive victory by defeating Panagoda CC comprehensively by 80 runs. Even though 8 players from the main squad were rested, UOM cricket team managed to maintain their winning momentum by securing a comfortable win.
The match was restricted to 35 overs because of wet surface. The captain of Panagoda CC won the toss and invited University of Moratuwa cricketers to bat first. Batting first the University of Moratuwa cricketers managed to score 196 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 35 overs. Batting at number 3, debutant Shashika Ranawaka was the star for University of Moratuwa cricket team as he scored a blistering 44, including 10 fours, to start his career at a high. Kasun Munasinghe came at number 8 and made an unbeaten 39 by starting his innings quite sensibly, but finishing it off rather aggressively. For Panagoda CC, Akila Anurudhdha bagged 3 wickets for 36 runs in his 7 overs, while Tharaka Manoj clinched 2 wickets in his economic spell by conceding only 3.7 runs per over.
Panagoda CC players had a slow start as they could succeed to score only 32 runs in the first 10 overs after losing 2 early wickets. After that they struggled a lot as their wickets started to fall at regular intervals. Shashika, who was having a wonderful debut managed to pick up the first two wickets of Panagoda CC. University of Moratuwa bowlers made the lives of Panagoda CC players uncomfortable by adding a lot of pressure with their stern attack. Finally, Panagoda CC could only manage to score 116 with almost 7 overs left to play and they were 80 runs short of University of Moratuwa Cricket team. Their number 8 batsman Sanjeewa Perera gave an individual fight by making useful 34 runs. Nevertheless, he ran out of partners and ended up at the losing side. Captain of University of Moratuwa, Vihangun Ariyaratne, lead from the front by picking 2 wickets for 27 runs. Another newcomer Dhanushka Sujith, who was making his second appearance for his team, grasped 4 wickets by giving away just 23 runs. Shashika Ranawaka, probably the player of the match, picked up 3 wickets at an economy of 3.5 runs per over by exhibiting his all-round talent.
The future of cricket of University of Moratuwa looks bright with the emerging talented newcomers in all three departments. They will be definitely hoping to keep up their winning fashion.
