Mora Men Won 10th Consecutive Title; Colombo Women Completed Whitewash

It was a great day at Colombo Rowing Club when University of Moratuwa and University of Colombo locked horns for the titles of Inter University Regattta 2017. UOM Oarsmen dominated the men’s races while UOC’s women completed the whitewash. Lads from UOM won 10th consecutive title reiterating their supremacy. Many races drew the spectators to the winning line as they turned out to be nerve-tingling.

Audience were able witness a splendid regatta at Beira Lake and many Old Mora, Old UOC oarsmen and women came to support their teams. They didn’t forget to spell the names “Mora” and “Colombo” whenever they defeated their rivals.


The day’s proceedings started with the men’s B scull race. Amidu Silva won the race commencing the Regatta in a winning note for UOM. But UOC retaliated for the initial loss when A scull oarsman Kemitha Jayamaha bettered his counterpart in a closely contested race. But Mora proved to be strong and subjugated all other races.

 Men’s B pair race was won by Sajiththan & Ranjan Balasuriya and made the spectators to stand on their feet as the oarsmen from UOM defeated their rivals with a lead of 3 seconds. Men’s A pair race was also turned out to be an exciting one when UOC came very close to the win. But, Damian Perera and Malith Gallage were able to resist the fierce challenge of UOC. Both B-four and A-four races were won by UOM quite easily. Malithi Vidanapathirana (cox), Malith Gallage, Uditha Gamage, Ayeshmantha Munasinghe and Dinith Arunasiri represented UOM in B-four while A-four team comprised of  Supun Nishshanka (cox), Dilanka Gamage, Amidu Silva, Damian Perera and Ranjan Balasuriya.

Though C-four and Graduate four races weren’t considered for point table UOM triumphed in those races as well. In the end, UOM totaled 36 points while UOC secured 6 points in Men’s category.


Women from UOC won all the races and UOM couldn’t challenge the Colombo Women as they continued to win races with big margins.

Chethana Gallage and Achini Jayaweera commenced the winning streak when they overcame UOM women in B pair race. Form there onwards UOC women were in full swing winning A pair, B scull, A scull and both B-four, A-four races. UOC’s B-four team included Kaneel Dias (cox),Thilini Cota, SLA Maneesha, Kavindya Dharmarathnam and Shannon Constantine and their A-four team comprised of Shehan Samarasena (cox), Chethana Gallage, Achini Jayaweera, Isuri Perera and Chamalee  Jayasundara. They bagged all 42 points in women’s category.
