University of Sri Jayawardanepura entered the field being the favourites to win the opening encounter of IUG 2018. After some minor errors and mishandling by both the teams Kosala Pahalagama drew first blood, scoring the try under the post at the end of a great run and added the extras as well(7-0). University of Jaffna replied with a try when their scrum half Hansa Dananjaya showed some great side stepping beating more than three Japura players and did well to convert his try(7-7). Jaffna displayed a better performance and showed great character in front of giant Japura. Nevertheless, Japura winger Shahen Silva did well to score their second try on the far left (12-7). Few minutes before the half time Uwin Ariyarathna completed a hard fought try for Japura. At lemons scores were 17 - 7.

Soon after the break Jaffna was able to maintain the ball possession but they were never allowed to move forward by the solid defense of Japura. In Spite scrappy play Jaffna earned a penalty and was cleanly put over by Hansa Dananjaya to reduce the deficit(17-10). Japura extended their lead when winger Shahen Silva burst through the defense of Jaffna executing a well set move after receiving the ball taken from scrum (22-10). Testing conditions at Colombo grounds and the departure of playmaker Hansa resulted setbacks for Jaffna. With a penalty try coming in Japura took control of the game(29-10).Finally Japura added another converted try to seal the victory(36-10).

The match between Wayamba University and Rajarata University started at 4.20 pm. As expected it was a neck-to-neck battle right from the kick off. Both teams clashed evenly. Aruna Wijesekara opened the scoring for Wayamba with a try  after a lovely hand-off to escape from Rajarata defender(5-0). Due to the tension of competitiveness there were many handling errors by both the teams. After much struggle Rajarata scored the most anticipated try when No.15 scored right under the post. Conversion  was also completed(5-7). Wayamba continued to attack and they came very close to another try but Supun Madushanka knocked-on when Wayamba was just few meters away. Just before the half-time Wayamba scrum half scored a crucial try to regain the lead (10-7). In the second half  both teams advanced to opponent’s territory several times. In the end it was the center for Wayamba who scored the try after a great run deceiving many Rajarata players with his unorthodox side steps. Wayamba made no mistakes with the conversion (17-7). A quickly taken penalty was made a try by dynamic play of Wayamba players and sealed the game with the conversion (24-7).

South Eastern University was easily beaten by Sabaragamuwa University with a comfortable margin of 29-0 while Uva Wellassa University bettered Eastern University with a score of 48-0. Unfortunately, today’s match between University of Ruhuna and University of Kelaniya was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. Stay tuned for more detials on IUG 2018 !
