13th Time Champs Are Out of the Tournament !

Inter University Football Championship 2018 was started at Uyanwatta Grounds, Matara yesterday with a colourful opening Ceremony. With only one day remaining in the contest, University of Moratuwa will be taking on University of Sabaragamuwa while University of Colombo will confront University of Peradeniya in the play-offs.

Group stage matches were worked off yesterday and today morning to select the best 8 teams that will qualify for knock-out stages. 13 Universities were categorized into 4 groups. In group A, University of Jaffna and Eastern University qualified for the quarter finals knocking Rajarata University out of the tournament. Sabaragamuwa University and University of Peradeniya eliminated Uva Wellassa University to advance from group B while University of Moratuwa and University of Colombo eliminated University of Kelaniya to ascertain their spots in quarters. Group D matches took center stage when both Wayamba University and South Eastern University had to win their last group stage game to qualify for the knock-out stage while University of Sri Jayawardanepura already qualified to quarter-finals. But University of Wayamba did well to secure the muchneeded win over University of Ruhuna while South Eastern University was unable to beat University of Sri Jayawardanepura and went out of the competition.

At 3.00 pm the first quarter-final match was started when Mora confronted Eastern. Eastern University had a great start to the game when they were able to put in several crosses in to the six-yard box of Mora. In reply Mora attacked numerous times to threaten Eastern defense. Unexpectedly, there was a handball inside Mora’s penalty box and Refree immediately awarded the penalty to Eastern University. Danikshan made no mistake in completing the penalty. At half-time scores indicated 1-0 in favour of Eastern. Right from the second half University of Moratuwa was attacking in full force and created many chances. Eastern University was restricted to their own with Mora’s immense pressure. Then it was time for Ajanthasingam to pull apart the defense of Eastern and score the equalizer. Singam dribbled the ball to the left and netted the much needed one. Both the teams couldn’t prevent the game from taking it to penalties. Anasraj, Udara, Jeewantha, Vidura and Inzamam successfully completed the penalties for Mora while Eastern squandered a penalty when Mandapa saved it for his team. Mora qualified for  Semis with a 5-4 penalty win.

Second quarter-final was worked off simultaneously in ground II between Pera and Japura. Both the teams battled tirelessly to score the goal. But, penalties came into play as both teams couldn’t score any goals. Pera players Umar Marikkar, Supithan, Champaka Warnapura, Mohamed Saneer and Hamthan Mohamed made no mistake with penalties while Japura failed to succeed in their first penalty. In the end, Pera advanced to semi-final with a penalty shoot-out of 5-4.

University of Colombo displayed great attitude against University of Jaffna and knocked out the defending Champions. Lads from Colombo made history when they defeated the 13th time crowned favourites, Jaffna, 1-0 and secured a place in semis. Rodney Shiron kicked a returned ball from his own free kick right into the post and mesmerized the entire crowd. In spite of Jaffna’s desperate attack Colombo never allowed Jaffna to score the equalizer. When Refree blew the final whistle, it was a dream came true for Colombo and the biggest upset of tournament for every spectator.

Sabaragamuwa University thrashed Wayamba Univesity by a 3-0 win and comfortably qualified for the semi-final. Mohamed Nasry scored twice  while Mohamed Najath scored once for  Sabra in their quarter-final match
