Jaffna Crowned the Champions of Inter University Football for the 13th time !

Once again University of Jaffna showed their rivals that they are the Kings of Inter University Football when they defeated University of Peradeniya in the Final of Inter University Football Championship – 2017. University of Peradeniya clinched the Runners-up trophy while University of Moratuwa secured the 2nd Runners-up title.

3rd day of the tournament was scheduled for Semi-finals, Consolation final and Final. In the first semi-final Jaffna confronted Mora to secure the birth in Final. Both teams were well balanced with good attacking strikers and solid defenders.  In the first half both Mora and Jaffna squandered few chances of scoring. At the end of the game scores indicated 0-0 and Jaffna was accurate with their penalties while Mora shooters were not on the target, thus Jaffna qualified for the Final.

In the second semi-final Pera scored their goal within the first half by a free kick that was precisely targeted on the post. After the commencement of second half it was a see-saw game when the strikers of both Pera and Japura tried their best, but, eventually it was all in vain. When Pera started to believe that they have won the match, Japura wing Yuraj Madhusanka netted the equalizer in the injury time to give a surprising end of 1-1 to the game. Nevertheless, Pera shooters made sure that they qualify for the final when they ended the penalties 4-3 in favour of them.

The two losers in the play-offs, Japura and Mora, played the consolation final in search of the 2nd runner-up crown. First half of this match was mostly dominated by Mora and Anasraj netted the sole goal in the match by a splendid shoot. In the dying moments of the match Japura came very close to the much-needed equalizer, but the strong wall defence by Mora defied the chances of Japura. Thus, Mora secured the 3rd place of the tournament.

The most awaited Final of Inter University Football Championship kicked off at 4.00 pm. Vincent Dias Stadium was filled with spectators supporting their team. From the starting whistle itself Jaffna displayed their attacking style of game coupled with speed movements and passes. In the first half Jaffna scored the only goal of the match by their rapid passes. Jaffna defenders never allowed to penetrate Pera strikers at any moment and maintained the 1-0 lead till the final whistle.

Thus University of Jaffna sealed the 13th title of Inter University Football Championship, the highest by any team in the Universtiy Football arena!!!
