Mandapa Takes Mora Soccer to Semi-Finals

With the participation of 715 teams from 60 different leagues, FA Cup Championship 2018 was started at the end of April this year. Consisting three rounds, in the first round 60 champions of various leagues played at the district/regional level  will qualify for the second stage. From there 32 teams will be advanced to the final stage and those will play with last year’s final 32 teams according to a draw which has been prepared by the Football Federation of Sri Lana. (FFSL)

The defending champions of Sri Lanka Universities’ Football League, University of Moratuwa opened their FA Cup Championship yesterday posting a thrilling win over South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

The match was kicked off at 3:45 pm at University of Moratuwa grounds. First half of the match was dominated by the home team and Ajanthasingam Jegasingam opened the scorecard of the match with a fantastic goal which was well supported by the captain, Udara Athukorala with a key pass. Mora created their second chance few minutes before to the half-time whistle. A shoot from Inzamam  was  not well cleared by the goalkeeper of South Eastern University ,paving way to  a rebound which was superbly  taken by Ajanthasingam once again and extended the lead for home side to 2-0 at the end of first half.

In the second half, South Eastern University entered the game by scoring a quick goal. Capitalizing on  back to back corner balls boys from Oluvil scored their second goal in no time. Both teams fought hard to score the winning goal within the full time of 90 minutes. In spite of some great moves by the strikers of both sides no one could succeed in scoring the winning goal. With all of these, the full-time scorecard indicated 2-2. Then the penalty shoot-out was started in order to decide the victorious side. During the penalty shoot-out, University of Moratuwa goal keeper Mandapa Pandithage made some brilliant saves, defying 3 out of 5 penalty kicks of SEUSL. In the end Mora Soccer team was able to win the penalty shoot-out by 3-2.  Anasraj, Udara Athukorala and Inzamam were successful with their penalty shoots.

With that win University of Moratuwa will be advancing to the semi-finals of Sri Lanka Universities Football League which will be against the winning team of the encounter between University of Colombo and Eastern University of Sri Lanka. We congratulate Mora Soccer for their impressive performance and best of luck for rest of the tourment!
