Paddlers Fight for Inter University Glory

It was the dawn of 8th of September 2018. The day was filled with excitement and uncertainty.  New gymnasium of University of Moratuwa was ready to scroll another remarkable page of Inter University Championship 2018. 14 universities were ready to entertain the spectators with their swift moves and rhythmic strokes.

The opening ceremony was graced by the Vice chancellor of University of Moratuwa, Pro. K.K.C.K. Perera and the physical instructor of Univeristy of Moratuwa, Mr. Lakshman Wijesuriya. Mr. Chandana Perera and Mr.Pradeep Nishantha also added glamour to the occasion.

The preliminary rounds were held in four groups, A, B, C and D for both men and women. They were so quiet and without much fuzz,the reigning champions easily cruised to the quarterfinal.

One could not get their eyes off the ground in front of these energetic moves of every team. The entire stadium was loaded with cheers while witnessing the triumph of the day. 

When the matches of the preliminary round steamed to an end quarterfinals began to proceed. It was the host, University of Moratuwa who emerged victorious in the  women’s quarter finals between MOR and JAF. The battle between University of Sri Jayawardenapura vs University of Wayamba ended with the victory for University of Sri Jayewardenepura with the scoreline of 3-1. The match between COL and RUH had the same scoreline in favour of Colombo. SAB put a step forward towards the trophy by defeating KEL for 3 to 1.

In the men’s category COL swiftly killed hopes of JAF with an easy 3 to 0 victory. University of Jayewardenepura again displayed their dominance in table tennis arena by defeating University of Ruhunu by 3 to 0. By beating PER for 3 to 0, KEL reserved their place for the semi- final. When MOR got selected for the semi-final, the score was settled as 3-1 against WAY.

Amidst lots of blessings COL, SJP, KEL and MOR proceeded to semifinals in mens’ category. SAB, MOR, COL and SJP secured its way towards the semifinals from the women’s category.

After resting for about one whole night, rackets and balls will gather again on the second day to make their universities proud by stunning performance. Be there at the gymnasium of University of Moratuwa to drive their unwavering spirit to a climax and witness another extraordinary table tennis contest.
