Inter-Uni 2018 | University Of Colombo Titled as the Champion King and Queen in Tennis

2018 Inter-university tennis tournament was held on the 6th , 7th and 8th July at Gymkhana Queens Club tennis court, Colombo 7 with the blessing of ideal weather over all three days. Showcasing their prowess once again in tennis, University of Colombo emerged as the champions in both Men’s and Women’s categories.

Inter university tennis tournament 2018 commenced on the last Friday with the participation of 8 universities. At the dawn of the second day, Colombo, Moratuwa, J’pura and Kelaniya universities had been selected for the semi-finals in both men’s and women’s events.

Colombo men’s team aced through to the finals with apparent ease by winning all three singles over J’pura by 2-0 in each.  Mora with equal grace entered the finals by winning the semifinals against Kelaniya by 2-0 in each.

In the Women’s semifinals, Colombo beat Kelaniya by winning three consecutive singles (2-0,2-0,2-1) to enter the finals smoothly just like their men’s counterpart. But it was not the case for J’pura and Mora. By the end of the first two singles, both teams have won a single each. J’pura managed to turn the match to their side by winning the third single. To the disappointment of Mora spectators, S.Herath and M.Methsarani of J’pura won the next doubles qualifying them to the finals.

After two days of magnificent cannonballs and deep shots the third day unfolded giving way to the most anticipated inter-university tennis matches of the whole year. Both finals were pure magic as all teams fought neck and neck to make the title their own. Final countdown to the finals between Mora and Colombo commenced amidst the cheers and encouragements of the supporters of both teams. The first single, between P.D.S.S. Pathirage of Moratuwa and S.R. Abeynayake of Colombo was unarguably, the best match of the entire competition.  The first two sets gave a chance for the spectators to witness one of the best tennis games played in the university arena as both players managed to win a set each. However, to the great disappointment of Mora fans, P.D.S.S Pathirage of Moratuwa injured at a critical moment turning the match to Colombo’s advantage.

The second and the third singles were also heart stopping and breathtaking as K.R.Wickramaratne from University of Moratuwa with Hisan from University of Colombo and E.M. Arunodha from University of Moratuwa with Y.Rangana  from Univerisyt of Colombo fought  against each other. Thrashing the dreams of University of Moratuwa of taking the title Colombo men’s team emerged as the 5th consecutive winners of the Inter University Games 2018. University of Kelaniya secured the third place by winning the loser final over University of Jayawardanapura.

Just like their male counterpart, women’s team of University of Colombo emerged victorious once again by beating University of Jayawrdanapura to secure the title.  In the losers’ final between University of Moratuwa and University of Kelaniya , Kelaniya girls managed to make an epic comeback by winning the third single and both doubles, although they lost the first two singles.

As Moraspirit, we congratulate all the winners for their accomplishments.
