Yet Another Silverware for Mora Tennis

The whole world had their eyes on New York for some Grand Slam Tennis action during the early September while Moratuwa Tennis squad silently added another trophy to their trophy cabinet. Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) conducted Division 9 Inter Club Tennis Doubles tournament on September 1st week. SLUG Champions, Moratuwa emerged victorious in the tournament with ease.

Every tie of this tournament had 3 Doubles games in it, while points were given accordingly for different matches. A team has to win 2 games out of those 3 to win the tie. Tournament had a League phase and Knock out phase.

Moratuwa Tennis squad opted for a mix of Experience and Youth for this tournament.

UOM didn’t have the best of the starts to the tournament as they lost to Fingara Tennis Clubin their first tie (2-1). Second tie was better but only just, as UOM drew level with Queens Club (1-1). UOM needed a miraculous turnaround to proceed in the tournament, and that is exactly what they produced.Besides those first 2 ties UOM didn’t lose a single tie in the rest of the tournament.

UOM faced Moors Club in the 3rd League Tie and won it comfortably (3-0) and started the turnaround. In the next 2 matches Moratuwa thrashed Cathedral B (3-0) and Cathedral A (2-1)respectively to book a spot in the semi finals.

UOM faced SSC in thesemifinals, and they couldn’t have won it more comfortably. Samithaand Laksith played in the very first match of the tie and won the game in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). Isuru and Anuradha also won their next game with the score of 6-4 and 6-1. Viraj and Hasala won the 3rd game and made it 3 out of 3 (6-1, 4-6 and 6-2).

Police Tennis Squad after winning the other semifinal were all set to play UOM in the GrandFinals. UOM won it in style without losing a single set in the whole tie. Samitha and Laksith pair started it off with another easy victory (6-0, 6-2). Isuru and Anuradha made it 2 out of 2 by winningthe next match with the score of 6-3 and 6-2. Viraj and Hasala completed the whitewash by winning the 3rd and final match by 6-1 and 6-4.

Moratuwa’s “It’s notover until it’s over” attitude helped them get over their bad start and handed them yet another silverware.
